Nowadays, the rate of purchasing has increased in modern countries. It is argued that people become more materialistic than previous decades. Although I admit that many people prioritize wealth, possessions, and status over moral values, I believe that it is overly simplistic to assume that materialism has replaced all traditional values.
On the one hand, modern economy and advanced technologies have made it easier for individuals to participate in consumerism. Firstly, pervasive advertising that has shown in media results in increased consumerism. People are constantly exposed to messages which equate success with material wealth and luxury goods, a desire for higher status through visible displays of affluence. Secondly, modern economy, particularly social media platforms, amplify this effect. These platforms allow individuals to showcase their possessions and lifestyles to a global audiences, reinforcing the notion that material success is a key measure of self-worth. Digital culture has focused on appearence and outward displays, creating the impression that people have become materialism.
On the other hand, I believe that some societies are consciously moving away from excessive consumption, prioritizing sustainable lifestyles. Firstly, these societies recognize social values such as environmental consciousness and social responsibility. Social issues have also gained prominence; sustainability and ethical consumption reflect values that transcend mere material acquisition. For instance, movements toward minimalism and mindful living indicate that a significant proportion of society is questioning consumer-driven norms and seeking a more balanced lifestyle. Secondly, mindsets shift toward digital possession and non-material value systems. In modern societies, the meaning of possession has fundamentally shifted. People increasingly invest in digital services and intangible resources such as education platforms and virtual entertainment rather than physical goods.
In conclusion, while materialistic tendencies are visible due to consumer culture and social media, it is inaccurate to say that they have wholly overshowdowed traditional values. In my opinion, people should balance the pursuit of material success with a growing emphasis on social and environmental responsibility.
