Many companies tend to promote sporting activities, such as football and rudby, which to them serve as a medium of advertising their products and services to the number of people that are watching the game. This essay will suggest that media exposure of the company is the merit, while advertising harmful products is the primary demerit of such activity.
The main credit of sport sponsorship is the massive media coverage the company recieves. For fans, who are watching the game directly in the arena or via television, they become exposed and aware of the products, whose fliers are ubiquitous in the arena. As a result, after the gameshow, the company would attract more customers and patronage, which would lead to more financial gains, that can be reinvesting into more players, more sport events, and the economy of their countries. For example, Coca-cola, a brand of soft drink was recently announced by Forbes to be the wealthiest and most successful company in the whole world, which is due to their enormous sponsorships.
Despite the credits, the discredit remains that some of these products could be harmful to the human body. An example is tobacco, which when consumed can cause respiratory diseases such as asthma, by deflating the alveolar sacs of the lungs both in adults, who are direct users and are watching the game, which is proudly sponsored by a tobacco company and in neonates, infants and toddlers, who are indirect inhalers of the byproducts, who were carried to the viewing centre by their game loving parents. For instance, a recent study conducted by Professor Shooh Carty in University of Oxford showed that tobacco is the second leading cause of death, after mosquitoes.
In conclusion, although sport events that are sponsored by some companies acts as a means of advertisement and have been effective in exposing the companies to the world, as well as boosting the sales of their products, but the fact that some of these products are harmful and can lead to the death of the clienteles is unacceptable. Therefore, the government should vet companies and their goods before approving their sponsorship for the safety of the society.
