It is often said that, since a large number of people are living longer, the age at which people step down from their job should be raised considerably. Personally I completely disagree with this statement because, elderly people need to have a rest after a long period of their career.
Firstly, old residents deserve to have a relaxation time, after a decade of hard work. They have been empoyed since their early twenties, and they are now tired physically and mentally. For instance, many pensioners are facing health problems, and they cant work anymore. This is because their bodies have weakened over the years. As a result, raising the retirement age would force them to keep working despite their health problems, which is unfair. Therefore, it is clear that older employees cant work productively as younger employees.
Secondly, raising the retirement age would harm the younger generation. If older empoyees stay in their jobs longer, fewer positions will be available for young people. This leads to higher youth unemployment, as graduates struggle to find work. For example, in countries with a high retiremet age, many young peolple remain jobless for years. Therefore keeping a normal retirement age benefits both older adults and the younger generation.
In conclusion, I completely disagree that the retirement age should be raised considerably. Older adults deserve a well-earned rest after a long career of hard work, and keeping a reasonable retirement age also protects job opportunities for younger people. Therefore, raising it would be both unfair and harmful to society.
