It is normally held that many businesses advertising themselves by sponsoring sports is beneficial for the world of sports, while others argue that this has several demerits. This essay will examine both viewpoints before concluding that the advantages of this development are more significant given that it was controlled stringently and effectively.
On the one hand, there are valid arguments regarding the drawbacks of sports sponsorship for advertising. Sponsorship agreements enable businesses to present their advertisements in websites, or stadiums of sports tournaments to promote their products. These advertisements are often eye-catching and sometimes flamboyant, resulting in irritation among spectators and viewers when watching matches since they distract them from enjoying the games thoroughly. This consequently forms a public perception that sports are increasingly associated with advertisements and gradually commercialized, meaning that the integrity of sports has been potentially eroded. For instance, pop-up advertisements often disrupt viewers’ enjoyment when watching important matches related to their nations via television or online platforms, declining their genuine interests in national sports.
On the other hand, the benefits this trend offers are undeniable regarding the world of sports. In order to improve the quality of tournaments and sports standards of countries, it is fundamental that potential athletes have sufficient opportunities to develop, which is still a challenge for impoverished countries where sports equipment and specialized sports experts are limited. By sponsoring these athletes, companies can indirectly provide athletes with adequate financial support, enabling them to access modern sports facilities, qualified coaches, healthier dietary patterns, and high-quality healthcare services. These advantages improve their performance in tournaments and achieve important victories, inspiring younger generations to pursue professional sports careers. Apart from benefits for athletes, through sponsorship contracts, businesses provide underprivileged areas with substantial financial assistance, allowing them to build modern stadiums and sporting infrastructure to hold large-scale tournaments, making it more accessible for the public to engage in sports activities, and ultimately promoting sports to communities.
From my perspective, while its risks of undermining the experience of the public and eroding the integrity of sports are irrefutable, these can be mitigated by sports organizations imposing stringent restrictions on the duration and frequencies that companies can present their advertisements. For example, online sports websites can allow corporations to run their pop-up advertisements during break times between matches to avoid interrupting viewer experience. Therefore, by efficient supervision, not only companies advertise their products and the world of sports benefit, but the demerits of this trend is also prevented.
