It is observed that a considerable number of companies advertise their goods and services by sponsoring sporting teams and events. This essay argues that, while this practice provides financial assistance to the team and individual, intense pressure to achieve success could be a major drawback.
On the one hand, partnernering with sports team and other activities by these companies, grants both the teams and members financial support. Simply put, it serves as a platform to advertise their products. This could vary widely depending on the agreement and the needs of such groups and their members, among these needs are, firstly, hiring an expert couch, secondly, facilities and infrastructural development and finally, provision of funds for the clubs and its members. For instance, in Nigeria, many production companies such as Adidas manufacturing company, sponsor these teams in order to advertise their sporting materials. Thus, sponsorship is the lifeline of many companies.
On the other hand, one notable drawback of the aforementioned phenomenon is mounting pressure on the members to be able to meet-up with a target.Put in another way, sponsorship can exert pressure on the clubs and its members. Therefore, this will not only lead to burnout but will definitely affect their well- being and performance. To illustrate, recently, the players of Dolfin Football Club of Nigeria, expresses their dissatisfaction over their officials politicizing the team as a result of sponsorship by these companies. Hence, compromising the standard of the team.
In conclusion, even though monetary support from these companies could be advantageous to the team, exacerbating pressure to enhance performance is a noticeable disadvantage.
