Most countries focus on economic development to improve their standard of living. However, this process can sometimes lead to the loss of important social values. In my opinion, the advantages of economic growth outweigh the disadvantages.
It is understandable why some people believe that economic development is detrimental. One reason is that many cultural traditions can vanish and can be replaced by modern values. As economic growth accelerates, people may prioritise efficiency, convenience, and profit over traditional customs and practices. For example, local festivals, folk music, and time-honored monuments can be neglected by younger generations who are more interested in cosmopolitan cultures or pop music. Furthermore, the disparity in the current society is becoming increasingly greater than in the past. The reason is that economic growth often benefits the wealthy and well-educated than poverty groups, which is the main cause widing the income gap . As a result, while some people enjoy luxurious lifestyles, others still struggle to afford fundamental necessities, leading to social tension and reducing social cohesion.
However, I still believe that economic development is more advantageous than disadvantageous. One clear reason is that citizens in countries implementing economic growth policies are presented with more lucrative career opportunities. As industries expand and foreign investments increase, more jobs are created, often with higher salaries and better working conditions. This not only improves individuals’ living standards but also enables them to contribute more effectively to the economy. Moreover, through economic development, infrastructure such as transportation networks, drainage systems, and public facilities can be significantly upgraded. Better roads and public transit reduce travel time and improve connectivity between regions, while modern drainage systems help prevent floods and improve public health. In addition, investments in hospitals, schools, and communication systems enhance the overall quality of life, making communities safer, healthier, and more efficient.
In conclusion, it is apparent that economic growth brings more benefits than drawbacks.
