It is true that there are a lot of nations that are cross-border trade of food products from others all around the globe. Although some people opine that this phenomenon has a number of benefits, I personally disagree that there are far more drawbacks.
On the one hand, it is clear that purchasing products from different areas would bring about several advantages. Local people can access diverse types of food such as cherry, kiwi or kobe beef which can not be cultivated in the region. This enhances people’s culinary experience and broadens their horizon about other country’s cuisines. Besides, the world’s economy can boost as a whole because of exchanging food products and bringing high income and profits. For this reason, local people can have more job opportunities working in related fields.
Despite the advantages mentioned above, I believe that importing goods from others is a negative development for various reasons. Firstly, the environment has a significant impact from delivery over long distances by trains, ships or planes that use a large amount of fossil fuels. These generate carbon footprints, causing global warming and natural disasters. Secondly, the health of consumers can get serious disease like cancer, due to adding chemicals or preservatives to keep products for a long time. Lastly, competition with domestic merchandise is indispensable as locals are easily attracted to exotic products from other regions, so local products can be ignored. The workers’ quality of life can be affected , caused by their revenues.
In conclusion, while I recognise the positive points of importing large quantities of food from other parts of the world, I consider it to be a negative development overall.
