Over the years, some customs have become obsolete, as they no longer reflect the realities and values of modern society. Much as outdated customs have lost their relevance, I strongly believe that many traditions continue to play a pivotal role in preserving cultural identity and strengthening social cohesion.
It cannot be denied that certain traditional customs have become obsolete because they no longer align with the realities and values of contemporary society. As societies continue to evolve, practices rooted in gender inequality, social discrimination or rigid cultural expectations often fail to reflect modern principles of equality and individual freedom. Consequently, retaining such customs may hinder social progress and limit ability to make independent life choices. To exemplify, in some cultures, women have traditionally been discouraged from embarking on higher education or professional careers due to long-established gender roles, despite the growing recognition of equal opportunities. For these reasons, if a conventional practice conflicts with fundamental human rights or contemporary social values, it should no longer be preserved.
Despite these concerns, the majority part of traditional customs continues to make a valuable contribution to society by preserving cultural identity and strengthening social cohesion. By enabling younger generations to remain connected to their history and heritage, many long-established traditions foster a strong sense of belonging in an advanced world. As a result, they help preserve national unique identity rather than allowing it to gradually disappear. A clear illustration for this is when national festivals, traditional ceremonies and local customs are often passed down through generations, ensuring that cultural values are not lost. Equally important is the fact that shared traditions bring families and communities together, encouraging mutual respect and reinforcing interpersonal relationships. Whether celebrating religious festivals or participating in cultural events, people have opportunities to strengthen social bonds and develop a sense of collective responsibility. Consequently, if such meaningful traditions continue to be preserved, they will remain an essential source of social unity.
To conclude the discussion, although certain outdated customs are no longer relevant to modern society and should be abandoned, I firmly believe that the vast majority of traditions remain worth preserving because they play a vital role in maintaining cultural identity and strengthening social cohesion.
