Modern people are now familiar with the globalization, with one of its most prominent aspects being the prevalence of similar goods and stores from global brands. However, there has been a controversial debate about whether it is either a positive or a negative signal for a country, which are discussed below.
Primarily, there are some noticeable benefits to global market and trade, exemplified by the proliferation of similar shops and merchandise. Firstly, it undoubtedly enables citizens of a country to access as well as afford products on a global scale. The remarkable growth of technology and science has overcome geographical barriers, allowing people from even in the smallest corners of the world to access and consume products from other countries. In addition, it also represents a considerable extent of wealth of a country where living standards have significantly advanced. This principle applies reciprocally, as the free market empowers people to continually contribute to the economy through their trading activities while also facilitating the importation of foreign goods. This, in turn, offers consumers with a plethora of choices beyond domestic products and shops.
Nevertheless, it is understandable if it is considered a significant negative development. Apparently, it eventually places a great pressure on local businesses and brands that have been struggling in the domestic market. Because modern consumers have been discerning and selective when making purchases and global products are often more appealing and enticing, domestic businesses and brands may strive to innovate their product to avoid being phased out. Furthermore, the erosion of traditional values is also a concern, as the increasing number of global products appears to gradually erase traditional boundaries. If people prefer imported products over domestic ones, particularly in prominent aspects of culture such as food and clothing, local businesses will struggle to survive in the free market and soon face homogenization due to globalization.
In conclusion, from my perspective, it is challenging to determine which side would outweigh the other, as people from every country may experience the advantages and disadvantages of global merchandise and brands. Each individual should be an insightlful consumer selecting the best product to benefit themselves as well as their own country’s economy.
