There is a growing belief among educators that foreign exchange programs bring benefits to students. In this essay, I am inclined to agree/disagree with this perspective as the compelling reasons supporting/opposing it overweight the opposing arguments.
On one side of the debate, this conviction appears to be unreasonable largely because studying abroad may have negative/native impacts on student’s social lives. This is particularly true for Vietnamese students who often find it difficult to integrate into a new society such as the UK, the USA, and Australia because of cultural differences between Asia and Western countries. The implication of this is that many of them fall into social isolation, potentially leading to depression and other mental illnesses. A further point to make is that pursuing education abroad might create a financial burden on students and their parents. This is clearly evident in students studying in Western countries who frequently pay a lot of money for tuition fees and living expenses. Therefore, students may have to work part-time to cover expenses, leading to a lack of concentration on studying.
In spite of the mentioned argument, I strongly support the notion due to more convincing factors. Primarily, my stance is rooted in the fact that attending university in a foreign country provides opportunities to enhance their broad knowledge. The case in point is individuals who often travel to many places, they can learn different life skills and encounter unusual perspectives on various cultures. The benefit of these is that they provide a practical foundation to apply to effectively future studies and careers.
On the other hand, people studying overseas will be more independent. For instance, students who live apart from family do a wide range of activities, so they have to self-clean, cook, manage money, and solve problems. This leads to being better prepared for new challenges in the future. Moreover, traveling internationally might considered an ideal way to learn a foreign language. To be specific, Australia, the USA, and the UK offer favorable environments to practice English and other languages with native speakers. Hence, people will improve their performance and create improved job opportunities long run.
In conclusion, despite acknowledging the potential arguments against the discussed viewpoint, there are overwhelming rationales to endorse the idea that people should attend overseas. That’s because it is not only beneficial to broaden knowledge but also enhance valuable careers and languages in the future.
