Band 9: Many manufactured food and drink products contain high level of sugar, which causes many health problems. Sugary products should be made more expensive to encourage people to consume less sugar. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The price of sugary drinks should be increased to discourage people from consuming excessive amounts of sugar. I agree with this measure because high sugar intake leads to various public health issues and places a long-term burden on national health services, ultimately hindering healthcare delivery.

From a public health perspective, there is an undeniable link between high sugar consumption and the prevalence of chronic conditions such as obesity and Type 2 diabetes. Currently, a significant portion of the young female population is experiencing reproductive health complications stemming from obesity, often leading them to seek expensive medical treatments. By increasing the cost of sugary beverages, governments can discourage the excessive intake of these products, thereby reducing the incidence of such life-altering health issues from an early age.

Consequently, the unhealthy consumption of carbonated drinks undoubtedly leads to chronic medical conditions, which hinders healthcare delivery to the general population. Moreover, this forces the government to allocate a significant portion of the national budget toward treating preventable illnesses, thus compromising the broader socio-economic development of the nation. Therefore, implementing a sugar tax would be an ideal approach to ensure sustainable healthcare, allowing resources to be redirected toward more critical medical conditions, such as cancer and emergency care.

In conclusion, imposing higher taxes on carbonated beverages is a prudent strategy to deter the public from consuming excessive sugar. By doing so, governments can not only prevent the rise of chronic illnesses but also alleviate the pressure on national healthcare services, ensuring a healthier and more economically stable future for the country.
