Nowadays, many manufacturers tend to add high amounts of sugar to drinks and food. For this reason, it is believed that the produce with added sugar should cost more to discourage people from buying it. While I admit that this approach may help people adopt a healthier lifestyle, I also think that we should look at this situation from a different angle.
It is important to keep in mind that sugar is somewhat similar to a drug because of its ability to cause addiction. People addicted to sugar can often seek comfort in sugary foods and drinks while living through tough situations. For that reason, it might not be easy for them to give up their coping mechanism, even if they understand the negative effects of high sugar intake. Similar to any addiction, raising prices for sweets may not bring the expected results, as people will buy the produce for a higher price to get the same feeling of comfort.
In my view, there is a place for different approaches to resolve this issue. For instance, people could be provided with a wider variety of sweets, that will not have such damaging effects on one’s health. There should be more affordable sugar-free options to choose from in order to make them more popular among the public. Another approach to consider is to encourage people to find other coping mechanisms instead of consuming sugary food. Finding a new hobby or engaging in some physical activities may help replace the destructive habits.
To conclude, I believe that the issue of high sugar intake should be handled differently. It is important to encourage people to choose a healthier lifestyle, not just limit their options.
