Nowadays, foods with a high sugar content cause a lot of discourse in society about the rationality of their consumption due to the health problems associated with them. There is a belief that making sugary products more expensive would lead to reduced consumption. This essay will argue about the significance of such actions and whether it will be beneficial for society.
First of all, it is important to state that products with high level of sugar have become ubiquitous in our lives, despite being undesirable. Fast food restaurants are located almost in every small city and sweet products such as chocolate, cakes, waffles are sold in every market worldwide. People get used to consuming such types of products and manufactures satisfy people’s needs. Besides, every year such companies as Coca Cola organize special campaigns for New Year and Christmas, promoting their products. This viral advertising attracts millions of viewers throughout the world and the public unconsciously goes to the shop to buy such sugary drinks as they somehow symbolize one of the most loved holidays. In this case, I think that the ban or price increase for sugary products will only elicit disappointment among people and destroy certain types of businesses. I am truly convinced that every person has their own right to choose which products to consume without external pressures such as price increases violating this right.
Conversely, among those who promote healthy lifestyle and diets, there is an opinion that raising prices for high-sugar goods, people will be encouraged to opt for fewer products of this type and try to replace them with healthy ones, for example with sweeteners. A lot of dietitians and trainers promote sugar substitutes. In every sports center worldwide you are offered not only a fitness program, but also a healthy diet scheme which includes different food additives to replace sugary products. In my opinion, despite the fact that such practice is already being implemented in affluent countries, this approach is certainly not for everyone and will not replace products with real sugar at all. If a particular person, while consuming sugar, does not see any changes in their body at the moment, it will be complicated to convince them that there is an urgent need to pay more for healthier product or change focus to sweeteners.
In conclusion, it is important to mention that the quality of the products consumed and their nutritional value are paramount for human health. This understanding should not be imposed by restricting methods such as raising prices for products with a high sugar content, but should be instilled from childhood and be fundamental in society.
