Scientists use living animals to carry out research. Some people think it is interesting, while some other people think it is cruel. Discuss both these views and give your opinion.
In the name of development, scientists have been testing on animals for various drugs as a part of the trial procedure for years. While many think that this practice is abusive to animals and counts as ‘animal cruelty’, others think that it is only necessary for the study and experimentation of various medications intended for the benefit of mankind. Although both these views are correct, I personally believe that animal testing should be restricted, if not banned, on moral grounds as well as to maintain the ecological balance on the mother Earth.
The ones who favour the practice of animals being tested on, mostly foresee the scientific advancements that follow the experimentation. This is because medical science has come up with some really life-saving drugs for various lethal diseases, and has also made it possible to repair the damages on skin, internal organs or even the bones and tissues. Apart from that, several medical colleges also make use of the animals, living or otherwise, to impart the necessary knowledge about the biological components and also about the skills like dissertation and surgery. Hence, for the various breakthroughs that scientific innovations bring about, experiments on animals become a mandatory and intriguing part, either to test the effects of a new medicine or as a part of the curriculum in medical science.
However, the progress does not, in any way, justify the cruelty that animals that they go through for the testing procedure. They are not only held captive, but are also artificially inseminated and forced to reproduce. At times, they are also kept without the necessities like food and water for the testing of several specific medicines. All these practices are ethically unjust and therefore, should be included in various wildlife protection laws. Further, the animals are mostly killed either through experimentation or become incapable of living in their habitats. Consequently, this disrupts the entire food chain because animals, especially the rodents, form a crucial part of the ecology.
To conclude, it should be borne in mind that the proper use of Science is not to conquer nature but to live in it. Animals should be tested on only if it becomes extremely necessary to do. Given the rampant damage that has been done in the name of development, it is only rational to restrict animal testing and make appropriate laws to protect the voice-less beings.
