It is often said that a large proportion of health issues individuals are facing currently are caused by inactivity. I agree somewhat; our daily movements definitely have an impact on our overall well-being. However, there are also other factors that contribute to medical issues; this essay will go into details on such aspects.
On the one hand, movement is essential for our physical (and mental) health. Therefore, a shift towards a more sedentary lifestyle is going to increase people’s likelihood of needing medical attention. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the West, with obesity being a common issue worldwide. There problems can be exacerbated by sitting at a desk all day, for instance. In this situation, you are not pumping the blood to help with circulation, you are also not burning as many calories as you would standing, and moreover, you are putting immense pressure on parts of your body, such as your spain. It is clear that sedentary ways of life can be one of the factors leading to a broad range of health problems.
That being said, a sedentary lifestyle is not the only factor that contributes to medical issues. Diet is also extremely important. Inflammation is a known cause of illness, and certain foods have anti-inflammatory properties, such as berries, which are packed with antioxidants. These can help fight disease. However, there are many foods with inflammatory properties, such as sugar, which can lead to health concerns over time. The diet in many western countries tends to be high in sugar and salt, which negatively impacts our health. Additionally, genetics and factors outside of a person’s control can lead to serious issues, for example, diseases such as cancer. These two factors are also contributors to medical problems as well as a sedentary lifestyle.
In conclusion, even though I agree that a lifestyle limited in movement can lead to medical problems, I believe it is not working in isolation. It is more than likely a combination of this, as well as diet and genetics.
