In contemporary society, there is an increasing number of parents relocating overseas for employment and bringing their families with them. From my perspective, I truly believe that the advantages it offers, particularly in terms of educational opportunities and family unity, are more significant than the disadvantages
Admittedly, this phenomenon may give rise to several undesirable consequences. As children have to settle in other countries with their parents for stable immigration, they may initially struggle to learn a new language, and adapt to unfamiliar living environments, which could eventually lead to social isolation and higher levels of stress. Since people are generally accustomed to the lifestyles they adopt in their native nations, external issues such as jet lag and climate variations can make individuals feel more stressed and unsuitable to enjoy their lives in the long run. By way of illustration, children may find it difficult to learn a second language when they live overseas with their parents, especially when it is combined with a large amount of homework and the pressure to adapt to a new educational environment. As a result, they are left with overwhelming and little time to spend on leisure activities, letting individuals deteriorate their mental and physical health to achieve fulfilling lives. Moreover, experiencing cultural shock has become an intangible barrier that makes families struggle to integrate into a new community. In particular, some countries may adopt unique customs such as celebrating unfamiliar festivals and observing different social norms, making the immigrants, especially the elderly with poor communication skills find it harder to communicate and collaborate harmoniously with local people there. In some worst cases, these cultural misunderstandings may lead to potential conflicts and let people experience social stigma, thereby alleviating their life satisfaction.
Nevertheless, I contend that the advantages of this trend are more substantial. Chief among these is a wider access to better living standards. This is because parents move abroad to seek more career opportunities and earn higher salaries, they are able to gain greater financial stability and independence, thereby providing their family members with better housing, healthcare systems, and living conditions. As a result, top-notch qualities can assist them in their daily activities, ultimately improving their living standards, especially when families relocate to a developing country. In addition, children who grow up in a foreign country are often exposed to high-quality education systems and multicultural environments, meaning that they must collaborate and study harmoniously with individuals with different backgrounds and countries. Having wanted to adapt with new peers, young individuals gradually trigger their curiosity to be willing to learn about new cultural values, and traditions, thereby inadvertently broadening their horizons about many cultural heritages, significantly reducing cultural barriers and connecting social cohesion as a whole. Moreover, living abroad also gives individuals more chances to catch educational opportunities as they learn to know a new language to adapt with a new country. Not only do they can acquire foreign language proficiency but also have higher career prospects to lead a more fulfilling life. Nowadays, many multinational companies give priority to applicants who are proficient in two or more languages, helping companies to reach more potential customers around the world and increase overall development. And this is synonymous with individuals gaining higher salaries to explore and pursue their personal interests in a new nation.
In conclusion, although moving abroad with one’s family can involve adjustment difficulties and reduced contact with relatives, I believe these disadvantages are outweighed by the long-term benefits, especially improved living standards and enhanced educational and career opportunities for children.
