Cooking is considered to be an art, which is necessary for survival. It is also considered as a blessing as this skill can serve many individuals. Some people argue that this essential skill should be taught in school regardless of gender, while others content that it would be a waste of school time. In this essay, I shall explore both the perspectives and present my opinion.
On one hand, proponents of the view that cooking should be included in the school curriculum, state that children are like sponges, they absorb whatever they are taught at a very young age. If school teaches cooking to children at early stages of life, they would develop this skill over time and prove to be beneficial in later stages of life. For example, If a student goes to a new country to study, it would be easier for them to adapt to new conditions, if they possess the skill of cooking.
On the other hand, advocates of the belief that teaching cooking is a wasteful utilization of school’s time, argue that children would learn to cook eventually in the the later stages of life, if required. Teaching cooking at school would not only waste children’s time, but also affect their academics, as they would have less time dedicated to studying. Moreover, children do not have a compulsion to cook for themselves as they are looked-after by their parents at home. Thus, they can concentrate on studies at school and learn to cook once they grow up.
To conclude, it is irrefutable that majority of the school time should be allocated for academics. However, it is equally important for students to acquire crucial life skills like cooking. It will not only help them at their later age, but also build a sense of independence in them.
