It is argued that it is necessary for nations to manufacture all the food for their population and only a minimum amount of imported food. From my perspective, I firmly disagree with this opinion. I believe that the meals provided by themselves do not meet the needs of society and also exert pressure on the agriculture of that country.
People who advocate that citizens should consume local food may believe that it is advantageous to country growth. Chief among these is that nations become independent in producing food, which helps their population reduce their expenditure on buying food and their reliance on importing feed from other nations.For instance, in some Asian countries, to buy Australian or USA fruits, people have to spend more money than local fruits and have difficulties seeking them.Another point worth mentioning is promoting the economy generally and agriculture specifically. This will encourage citizens to support their own food and also prevent it from becoming unmarketable.
On the other hand, I still oppose this view, saying that it is not practical and cannot meet the full requirements of the public. The first point is that it depends on natural conditions and production levels, which limit food resources. Specifically, the capabilities of food-producing techniques and farmland features are the factors that determine how abundant food products can be produced. As a result, it creates a burden for farmers to make sure they have enough output and provide high quality for their population, including harsh climates such as drought, floods, etc. that easily lead to famines. Furthermore, some essential products cannot be impossibly planted in countries due to their climatic conditions. A case in point is that some cold countries, which have severe climates that are harmful for grain growth, have to import these foods from tropical nations.
To conclude, I acknowledge why some people believe that the population should be fed by their country’s food production. Nonetheless, I still hold the belief that it will lead to a lack of different foods around the globe and let farmers take on the huge responsibilities of serving.
