Band 9: Many people believe that individual actions can help tackle climate change, while others argue that only governments and large organisations can make a real difference. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The accelerating threat of climate change has ignited global discourse on the most effective agents of mitigation. While some contend that grassroots initiatives and personal lifestyle adjustments can contribute meaningfully to environmental preservation, others maintain that substantive change can only be accomplished through institutional intervention. In my view, a dual-track strategy that incorporates both civic engagement and policy-driven reform offers the most viable solution.

Proponents of governmental and corporate responsibility underscore the disproportionate environmental footprint of industrialised sectors. High-emission activities such as deforestation, fossil fuel extraction, and large-scale agriculture are often beyond the control of individual actors. Thus, sweeping legislative action, fiscal incentives for clean technologies, and international climate accords are indispensable in orchestrating meaningful change. Norway, for instance, has pioneered electric vehicle adoption through aggressive subsidies and infrastructure investment, illustrating the transformative power of state-led initiatives.

Conversely, advocates for individual accountability argue that collective behavioural shifts can catalyse broader systemic transformations. Conscious consumerism, energy conservation, and reduced reliance on single-use materials not only diminish personal carbon output but also influence market trends and corporate ethics. In countries like the Netherlands, widespread public commitment to sustainability has fostered a cultural ethos that embraces environmental stewardship, prompting businesses and policymakers to respond accordingly.

In summation, while governments and multinational entities possess the legislative and financial leverage to enact macro-level reforms, the cumulative impact of individual actions forms the ethical and social bedrock upon which sustainable progress is built. An integrated framework that leverages both spheres is imperative for addressing the multifaceted nature of climate change.
