Band 7+: Many people believe that the best way to produce a happier society is to ensure that there are only small differences in earning between the richest and poorest members. What extent do you agree and disagree with?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Many people argue that government should keep the income gap between the richest and the poorest as small as possible in order to create a happier society. I completely disagree with this perspective because I believe that this approach is neither the most effective nor the most practical way to improve people’s well-being.

On the one hand, ensuring only a small difference in earnings would require significant government intervention, which could lead to several negative consequences for both individuals and society in a whole. To achieve such a policy, government would have to intervene in the labor market through measures such as imposing high taxes on top earners or even redistributing income. Although these policies may reduce income equality, they could also overlook differences in people’s ability, responsibilities and contributions, making the system appear to be less fair. As a result, people may become less willing to invest years in education and professional training if they know that their effort will bring only a limited financial return. For instance, a doctor or an engineer who spends many years acquiring specialized knowledge may receive only slight higher pay than someone whose job requires far fewer qualification. Over time, this could discourage talented individuals from pursuing highly skilled professions, leading to shortages of qualified employees in sectors such as healthcare, education and scientific research. Consequently, the overall productivity and long-term development of the country could be negatively affected. Therefore, forcing people to earn relatively similar incomes may ultimately reduce, rather than improve the social welfare, meaning that it can hardly be regarded as the best way to produce an happier society.

On the other hand, government does not necessarily need to equalize incomes to provide equal opportunities and public services. People of all classes can still enjoy a high quality of life if they are able to access affordable healthcare, good education and reliable public services. When people are given equal opportunities, they are able to improve their lives through their own efforts. This not only promotes social mobility but also encourages individuals to study hared, work hared and contribute more to society.

In conclusion, a truly successful society is one that rewards effort and ability while ensuring that every citizen has the opportunity to live with dignity and reach their potential.
