There has been considerable debate about whether the government should regulate the consumption of unhealthy food, or if individuals should have the freedom to choose, despite the negative impact on overall well-being. From my perspective, the government has a crucial responsibility to protect public health, as it is necessary to manage overconsumption of junk food.
On the one hand, regulating fast food is an essential approach for maintaining public health. Due to the high sugar, fat, and oil, fast food has a direct effect on the digestive system and immune health, leading to a range of diseases such as diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Most unhealthy food has such a strong flavor, including high sugar, salt and various types of sauces, which makes people, especially youth, addicted to, increasingly difficult for people to resist. Furthermore, measures such as limiting the amount of strong ingredients, implementing higher taxes, and organizing campaigns to persuade individuals to make health-conscious decisions can be taken by the government, instead of banning all of them.
On the other hand, in a democratic society, individuals have a fundamental right to personal freedom, including the independence to make choices about what they consume. Heavily influencing choice of daily lives and overreaching personal life can risk undermining the capability of making daily life decisions. Additionally, it will be unfair for those who eat unhealthy food occasionally, if the government regulates the consumption of food in order to protect public health.
In summary, regulating the devourer of unhealthy food can offer numerous pros and cons. It preserves public health, while overreaching personal lives.
