A lot of people opt to travel to a foreign country as a way to master its native language instead of attempting to study it from their hometown. While doing so may appear to hold obvious benefits, there are also several concerns to consider before jumping the gun.
On one hand, learning a language in a country where it is the citizens’ mother tongue offers various advantages. It has been proven that immersive learning is a method that can rapidly improve language acquisition. By living in a place surrounded by native speakers, a student will be able to learn more effectively and efficiently. Another benefit of visiting a foreign soil is that we can also sharpen our communication skills through direct interactions with people from a different culture. This skill is invaluable in this globalization era, where global collaboration is the key to success.
On the other hand, international travel can be expensive. In the current economy, international flights tend to be costly, and some people may not be financially stable enough to bear the burden. Furthermore, several nations may impose strict regulations for foreigners that may have severe consequences if ignored or broken. The Republic of China, for example, has deemed certain areas to be forbidden for visitors, failure to comply or simply being ignorant of the rule will cause the perpetrator to be detained by the police.
To sum up, travelling to another country does offer certain benefits, namely immersive learning and communication skill improvements. However, there are also drawbacks to be put into consideration such as the cost and regulations pertaining to travellers. In the end, I would argue that the merits of learning a language by visiting its country of origin are too beneficial to ignore. Immersive learning alone offers instrumental improvements in mastering a particular language, heightened communication skill is also an attractive bonus.
