Band 5+: Many people join distance learning programs and study at home, but some people think that it cannot bring the same benefit as attending colleges or universities does. Do you agree or disagree? Use specific reasons and examples to support your answers.

Keeping abreast of the 21st century, a large number of people are keen on receiving tertiary education. Distant learning, a state-of-the-art educational model, has gained currency among students. I believe that the effectiveness of this form of education is genuinely open to discuss.

First of all, distant learning requires students to be mature and committed, in the absence of teachers and tutors. To explain better, this educational model only suits people who are self-directed enough and independent to manage themselves without supervision. If the students have difficulty in self-scheduling and independence, then their efforts will be vain and disorganized.

Secondly, the second weakness of distant learning is its over dependence on media. There are a myriad of contents that can divert the attention of students from studying. Games are an example which there are a lots of them on media. They can be distracting and divert the attention of students to them. On the other hand, these distractions would not happen in the university’s campus, where everything is supervised by faculty members.
