It is debatable whether completing tertiary college programs or starting work right after highschool will ensure students of a good job post graduation. Certainly, there are benefits and drawbacks associated with each approach but in my opinion, completing a course of university education grants students a higher likelihood of a desirable position.
On the one hand, looking for employment after highschool has several advantages. Firstly, students who seek employment early have the opportunity to learn practical social skills through part-time jobs which can be implemented later into their professional career. More specifically, such short-term roles offer valuable hands-on abilities such as time management, improved communication, and negotiation proficiency. To illustrate, working as a chef assistant develops one’s clerical skills as well as team-working capabilities, which are invaluable to finance related occupations. Secondly, not enrolling in university relieves the financial burden on parents and students who have to pay off student loans after degree completion. Especially in developed countries such as The United States or Canada, where college tuition well exceeds the 6-digit figure mark, paying off such debt can put immense pressure on parents and students alike.
On the other hand, completing university can be incredibly advantageous. For one, by attaining a college diploma, students greatly enhance their chances of getting their desired jobs. This is evident in the fact that corporations are increasingly reliant on formal educational certifications to select prospective employees, with candidates having high academic achievements being prioritized by employers. For instance, those with a university degree will have an edge over individuals with no qualifications, thus being more likely to attain their coveted position. Furthermore, tertiary education programs are a great networking ground for students. By having connections with their professors, students gain access to a multitude of internship opportunities which otherwise would not be available, thus acquiring valuable work experience and having an advantage in the job market. Additionally, by enrolling in a university program, students learn crucial, specialized knowledge in their field, enabling them to get promotions by being a better worker.
In conclusion, while there are several benefits by immediately seeking employment after highschool, such as learning practical skills and lessening their financial burden, i believe the advantages associated with a university diploma is of greater essence, namely a more complete and profound skillset as well as better networking opportunities.
