It is often said that a good university degree helps people find a good job. I completely disagree with this idea. This is because there are too many graduates today, and employers care more about demonstrable skills than only a degree.
The first reason is that a university degree is not special anymore. There are many students who finish university every year. This has eroded the value of university degrees and created a saturated market. Because of this, many graduates are underemployed and cannot find the jobs they want. For example, in Vietnam, many students with business degrees work in jobs that do not need a university degree. Therefore, paper credentials alone cannot help people get a good job.
The second reason is that many companies want people with skills and experience. They do not only look at university degrees. For example, some companies hire workers who have a strong track record and demonstrable skills. These people can do the job well even if they do not have a famous degree. Today, skills are the true currency of the job market.
In conclusion, I completely disagree that a good university degree always helps people find a good job. A degree is useful, but practical skills and experience are more important for getting a good job.
