Instead of connecting with other people in real life, a major part of the population has begun to communicate on the internet. Whilst using social media platforms in order to communicate with others offers benefits such as convenience and efficiency, it directly contributes to the loss of real-life human connection. In my opinion, the detrimental aspects of this trend completely outweigh the advantages.
On the one hand, despite living in different countries and having vast geographical distances, the internet closes the gap by providing platforms for talking. For instance, WhatsApp is used worldwide and is considered to be one of the best applications that function without any complications. Regardless of country codes, its users can easily contact anyone simply by texting or clicking the ‘call’ button. Ultimately, individuals maintain their bonds and prevent the deterioration of connections that hold paramount importance.
On the other hand, the alarming increase of lost human connections and the erosion of social skills overshadow the benefits created by this trend. Nowadays more people report feeling disconnected from society than in the past. For example, corporations are switching to working online since it reduces commuting time. However, an engrossing, screen-based lifestyle limits employees from forming important bonds in the workplace. As a result, people start avoiding human contact and slowly lose their social skills.
In conclusion, even though online communication provides its users with great benefits, it also introduces problems that put society at risk. Nevertheless, I believe that losing communication skills is of higher concern.
