In today’s society, social media has become an increasingly important part of daily life, allowing people to keep connected with others and stay updated with current events. Although this trend has some disadvantages, I believe that its merits clearly outweigh them.
On the one hand, it cannot be denied that using social media as a tool for communication and news updates is associated with some concerning issues. One major disadvantage is that social media can spread false information. With a large amount of phone use, information can be reposted and then continued sharing so quickly. This can result in the widespread misinformation among all users, especially younger children who lack media literacy. Another drawback is that the excessive use of social media can waste people’s time. Specifically, these platforms provide an endless stream of constant videos, which traps users to absorb in the content and keep scrolling within hours.
On the other hand, social media offers several significant benefits. The major one is that it makes it easier for people to maintain their relationships, even when they are separated by geographical distance. Through social networking sites, people can communicate by sending messages or making calls. For example, international students may call their parents to share their daily experiences or study schedules without having a meeting in person. Hence, geographical distance is less likely to weaken relationships due to the fact that social platforms allow people to communicate more frequently. What is more, on account of the prevalence of the Internet, people can get access to news quickly. Major news organisations and official pages provide real-time news updates, which are then rapidly reposted and shared across social media platforms, thereby, people stay up to date with the latest information.
In conclusion, despite the potential drawbacks of social media, such as spreading misinformation and excessive use, its ability to keep people connected and provide rapid access to news updates makes its overall merits greater than its disadvantages.
