Tourism can generate a substantial amount of income for many countries when this sector is adequately developed. However, various issues can also be raised if proper management of the tourism sector is neglected. This essay will discuss the positive and negative impacts of tourism in this contemporary society, and I will share my opinion on whether the advantages tourism brings prevail over its disadvantages.
Firstly, tourism plays a pivotal role in boosting the country’s economy. Tourism not only attracts local tourists but also foreigners to explore the beauty and wonders of a country. For instance, the rich and diverse biodiversity of a country can be utilized, so that people from all corners would be willing to spend in order to expand their worldview in foreign countries. Consequently, multinational companies will invest in the tourism sector of the country when they have profound confidence in the country’s ability to attract foreigners. Secondly, tourism opens up a vast range of employment opportunities. The unemployment rate of fresh graduates can be reduced by offering different job positions in the tourism industry. Take young people with a major in hospitality as an example, they can be employed to overlook the businesses of multiple hotels in an area where tourists often visit.
Tourism is a double-edged sword that is not without its disadvantages. On the other hand, tourism could cause dissatisfaction among local residents. This is due to the unequal job opportunities and privilege enjoyed by local residents living in tourist areas. Some farmers and fishermen may be offered a golden chance for additional income by fulfilling the role of a local tourist guide, while some living in areas where the government see as potential space for the development of tourism may be forced to relocate and as a result, lose their jobs. Also, hygiene problems may arise if the cleanliness of the tourist area is not taken care of. It is of paramount importance that the informative sign boards are placed and hygiene-related laws are enforced to ensure that tourists will not become a source of pollution in the country.
From my perspective, the benefits tourism offers certainly outweigh its drawbacks. As we know, the importance of a prosperous development of the economy in a country is second to none. Despite the potential issues that tourism can pose, these problems are completely evitable with proper management. Negative impacts of tourism can be minimised if government agencies can collaborate closely with private agencies to carry out the necessary initiatives.
In conclusion, the government should not be afraid to allocate funds for the tourism sector because it is one that is promising to the development of the country as a whole and provides profitability without doubt when run well.
