In many countries, the skill gap in the labour market is growing larger every year, causing difficulties for employers to find appropriate workers for the available jobs. There are some major causations for this problem; however, there are also plausible solutions to address this challenge.
The skill gap is caused by a combination of a forever-changing job market and an out-of-date education system. Students cannot path out their career suitable for the unforeseeable future because of how quickly the job market is changing. Therefore, employers can not find workers for jobs that did not exist when the current job applicants were studying. Furthermore, schools and colleges are not following the current market trends that are fundamental for students. In the USA, almost one half of schools do not provide computer science classes, which is heavily important for most jobs in the market.
While the skill gap is getting increasingly larger, there are possible solutions to combat this. One way is for the company recruiters to take a more hands-on approach. Businesses have the best understanding of the job market. Therefore, they should collaborate with schools and colleges to train and help students be prepared for the future. Additionally, the job applicants themselves should find other ways to train and learn essential skills for their targeted jobs. There are available courses such as Coursera and EdX; and vocational schools that provide skills useful for most kinds of jobs. Using these opportunities will the skill gap be closed.
In conclusion, there are many problematic causes for this dilemma such as the unpredictable job market and the outdated education system. However, feasible solutions both from society and from oneself can help mitigate this sill gap.
