Studying at university can be more challenging for students than studying at school. Several factors contribute to this difficulty, and in this essay, I will propose some measures to address these problems.
There are various reasons why many students find studying in higher education more challenging than in secondary or high school. Firstly, the amount of knowledge at university is vast and can be overwhelming for students who have just started their undergraduate programs. While the curriculum in general education is straightforward and consists of basic knowledge from textbooks, the curriculum in higher education is more academic and complex. College students often have to absorb several chapters’ worth of information in just one class session. Another reason for the difficulty is the expectation for students to study independently without constant supervision from teachers. At university, lecturers do not monitor whether students are studying or not. In contrast, school teachers frequently assign homework and provide guidance on which topics will be covered in exams. University lecturers, however, often teach the entire syllabus at once without offering specific advice or requirements for effective study.
To address these issues, several solutions can be implemented. One significant approach to reduce the challenges faced by students in higher education is to encourage active study habits and proactive learning. College students should review lessons and analyze the syllabus before attending classes. They can actively seek help from professors regarding difficult concepts and request additional resources related to their major. This approach will enhance students’ understanding of their subjects and develop their active learning skills. Moreover, learning how to manage time effectively and setting clear goals are crucial measures for students in tertiary education. Setting goals helps students visualize their objectives and plan their tasks accordingly. By employing time management skills, they can allocate specific periods for different study activities, thereby maintaining control over their learning process.
In conclusion, while studying at university or college can be more challenging than at school, these difficulties can be mitigated through effective study methods and self-study skills.
