A growing number of young people aspire to gain popularity on social media platforms. This trend is mainly driven by their desire to captivate numerous followers, likes and comments on their profile, and an easy way to make money by advertising items. However, I believe that this can lead to the major drawbacks to consider such as it can harm mental-health and academic performance.
One of the main reasons for this trend is the desire for more attention and recognition. As youngsters see famous vloggers on social media, they start to be interested in following the same path. They start to take videos of themselves and upload them on their profile to gain popularity in the hope of gaining followers and receiving likes and comments. Secondly, the prospect of earning money comes to their mind. They see that other influencers are advertising items and earning money which lead to believe becoming famous online is an easy way to make some money.
Despite these attractions, this, in turn, can lead to negative mental-health well-being. If young people see that their videos are not getting many watchers or getting enough like or comments, they start to compare themselves with other famous successful vloggers. As a result, this can lead to negative mental-health problems, such as they can suffer from anxiety or experience burnout. Another negative consequence of this trend is it can distract youth from their academic responsibilities. Since they spend too much time on recording videos, they forget to complete their tasks, for example school homework, delay projects, and getting ready for their important exams. As a result, if they stop to be famous on social media after a long period of time, they can be negatively affected their future educational opportunities.
In conclusion, the desire of recognition and the prospect of making money are the main reasons. Nevertheless, I believe it is a negative development because it can undermine their mental-health well-being, and distract to their academic performance.
