Band 7+: Many young people do not spend their holidays and weekends doing outdoor activities like hiking and climbing in natural environments. Why is this the case? How can they be encouraged to go out?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a growing trend in which young adults do not spend their holidays or weekends doing outdoor activities such as hiking or climbing. While this phenomenon has a number of reasons, I believe there are several ways of dealing with the problem.

One of the major reasons is the development of technology. Nowadays, young adults increasingly rely on electronic devices such as laptops, smartphones, and even streaming services which keep them occupied throughout the day. Social media like instagram, TikTok and other entertaining platforms provide endless content which gives a sense of relaxation to children. As a result, young people tend to scroll their digital devices instead of going to a natural environment. Another contributing factor is the lack of time. In modern society, even young individuals are more likely to have heavy workloads and tasks, which impact on a young individual’s freedom. Moreover, modern universities require from applicants a strong academic achievement and knowledge, leading young people to practice even more.

To tackle this issue, both individuals and governments can take action. On a personal level, young adults should use their digital tools less. For instance, instead of using electronic items every single day, they can go to the mountainous areas once or twice a month, ultimately improving their overall well-being. The implications are not confined to health improvement but also young individuals are more likely to improve environmental awareness. On a broader scale, schools and universities should give students less challenging tasks. This is because, when students have straightforward exercises, they will spend their time exploring wildlife and green spaces. Furthermore, the government should also require candidates with weak academic requirements because young people are more likely to have enough time for exploring the environment.

In conclusion, electronic devices and heavy workloads have caused us to explore the environment. However, by reducing screen time and weakening academic requirements, we can alleviate this issue effectively
