Remote work is becoming an increasingly common trend. In my opinion, working from home enables individuals to have a flexible schedule and experience less stress. However, its negative effect on social life and productivity cannot be overlooked.
Working from the comfort of home gives people freedom to have a flexible timetable. In offices people generally have to finish their tasks within fixed working hours, as they must leave the premises after that. Sometimes, people do not perform well if they are consistently forced to work within strict limits. Moreover, at home one can decide on a suitable time of the day when they are more productive. For example, a software engineer who is more productive at night can work for long hours and can deliver better results. Besides this, the environment of some organizations is quite strict, which puts a huge pressure on workers. In the desire to outperform others and gain a promotion, employees often become anxious, affecting their health and productivity. Therefore, the absence of competition at home makes them feel more comfortable and stress-free.
However, there are some negative consequences of this trend, such as weakened social interactions and reduced productivity. When individuals are confined to their living spaces most of the time and do not participate in social gatherings, they become isolated. This can have an effect on their emotional health and interpersonal skills. For instance, many remote workers report feeling of disconnection with their colleagues due to lack of in-person contact, and they feel lonely and left out. Furthermore, the absence of competition reduces productivity and individuals do not have to compete and out-perform others, therefore, they do not feel the need to go the extra mile. For example, where working from home improves productively of some employees, as per reports it can reduce 50% productivity due to a lack of structure and supervision .
In conclusion, remote work gives workers the freedom to create a flexible work schedule and feel less stressed. However, the consequences of reduced performance and feelings of disconnection cannot be ignored.
