Band 6+: More and more people do not feel safe when they leave home. Why is this? What could be done to address this issue?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Being scared to leave the house is becoming more common. The main reason behind this is the increase in crime rates. An effective measure to improve the situation is to ensure safety in public spaces.

The principal cause of feeling unsafe outside is the high risk of encountering criminals. Population growth has created economic difficulties, and many people find themselves in desperate situations with no straightforward way out. Consequently, the need for money or mental health problems caused by difficulties of life encourage people to commit crimes. Anyone can become a victim of those crimes, as offenders are only concerned with their own benefit. Research has shown that level of crimes that occur on the streets has increased by about 10% worldwide over the past decade, while the frequency of robberies and burglaries has risen by 30%, which becomes another reason for fear.

One of the possible solutions to this problem would be the government taking actions to ensure safety of citizens. In situations where inhabitants feel in danger for their lives or property, only the government can improve their security since solutions of others are not effective. Therefore, state services such as the police and rescue services should establish trusting relationships with people through constant patrolling and quick response to appeals. As an example police work can be diverse, in New York, the use of «the broken window theory» has reduced the crime rate by more than half in several decades, as maintaining a safe atmosphere on the street has affected the perception of criminals and ordinary residents.

In conclusion, both the creation of conditions for the increasing crime rate and the provision of peaceful environments for residents are the responsibility of the government. Better conditions can be achieved by strengthening the work of government authorities.
