There has always been debate about whether investing in teaching science is always a crucial way to keep a developing and progressing nation because other subjects are not necessary. Personally, I completely disagree with this opinion and this essay will explain why.
To begin with, although a developing country depends more on science and technology, other subjects are as important as science. It is undeniable that a good foundation of technology and science will lead to national economic growth, GDP increase and life quality improvement. However, literature, history and language bring a deep understanding of culture, tradition and custom of a certain country, especially in globalization nowadays. Besides, the national pros and cons of terrain, populations and economy of the country, mainly come from knowledge of geography, which are essential before thinking about national development. For example, in Vietnam there is no subject called “science”, the Vietnamese curriculum is divided into two aspects which are natural science and social science including five small subjects such as physics, chemistry, biology, history and geography.
In addition, numerous environmental issues have to be dealt with when developing and progressing such as climate change, environmental pollution and energy security. Focusing more on educating science for students but forgetting to enhance the students’ awareness of protecting habitat will lead to loss of living environment or even biodiversity in the long term. For instance, Vietnam – a developing country – is facing a huge number of environmental problems which are air pollution from vehicles’ emissions, water pollution from wastewater of companies and factories. Therefore, instead of putting more effort into national development, the government should concentrate more on teaching students’ cognitive skills, helping them realize the responsibility of protecting the environment.
In conclusion, it is undeniably the pivotal role of teaching science in schools, especially in the context of modernization and industrialization nowadays. However, it should not overshadow the importance of other disciplines such as culture, tradition and environmental responsibility, which are equally essential for a nation’s sustainable progress.
