In contemporary society, there is a widespread tendency of people utilizing social media platforms to form online bonds and relationships. In my opinion, I firmly believe this is a negative development since the ties formed online may be short-lived.
On the one hand, it is hard to tell whether friendships and relationships formed through social media are either genuine or will last. This is primarily because most of the time the involved parties do not know each other better before deciding to get into serious friendship. Since they meet online, some may hide their real characters behind the screens and only present their false pictures. As a result, Individuals get deceived by false narratives which does not last longer and get disappointed in the end when they learn the truth. A pertinent example is online sites such as Instagram where several participants hide their real pictures and display different photos claiming to be theirs to receive members. Consequently, the ties formed online weaken overtime as truth is bond to unfold.
On the other hand, with the busy schedules in the contemporary society, and little time is left to mingle, social media has significantly enabled individuals to meet new friends and form relationshis. This is due to the fact that people can simply log into their online accounts, scroll through, chat and video call with strangers. As a result they get to interact with new people and even form lasting bonds. In Facebook, for instance, members from across the globe can exchange ideas by just sending friend requests. People also meet their through mutual friends suggestions enabled by this platform. Ultimately, feelings of isolation are decreased and overall well- being of the society is enhanced.
In conclusion, although social media may provide a platform for meeting new people, I strongly believe it is a negative development as the ties formed may be untrustworthy and may weaken overtime. People should use social media for mingling purposes with caution.
