Nowadays, people are debating whether the increase in the average age of death, is considered advantageous or disadvantageous. Some argue that such trend causes many problems for the governments, while others believe that older people are very useful to the community. This essay will evaluate whether this phenomenon is considered a positive or a negative development for individuals and society as a whole.
On one hand, one key driver for a stabilized society is to have strong connected families. Elderly people have a great role in keeping their families interconnected. With their kindness and unconditional love, they succeeded in building solid bonds between relatives. Additionally, older people provide younger generation with wisdom, as they transfer to them their experience which reflects on the personal growth of young people. Consequently, the emotional support that the elderly give, attributes to community’s stability. For example, studies show that societies which have a large number of aging populations, tend to be more solid because of the strong relationships between families.
On the other hand, governments of countries which have an increase in the average age of death are facing some difficulties. First, elderly people require high medical care due to the diseases that come with aging. Accordingly, governments have to invest more money on health care of older people. Second, when people reach to the age of retirement, they are entitled to pensions, therefore, authorities must allocate part of the country’s budget for pensions, which places more financial pressure on governments.
In conclusion, aging comes with a price as elderly people require a high health care, also they put burdens on governments to pay for retirement pensions. Nevertheless, older people are undeniably important to any community, they are one of the key drivers for a strong connected society. Therefore, the benefits that elderly people bring to society outweigh the challenges that they cause to governments.
