While someone believes that university students need to focus on studying science and technology subjects, others believe that choice of subjects should be optional. From my point of view, students should be free to decide regarding to their preferences or skills.
On the one hand, there are some reasons why people believe that students should focus on science or technology disciplines, such as their high value for society. Humanity development was mostly based on appearance of technology and science: creation of electricity and lamps, progress in medicine. If all of the students preferred to build a career in these fields, there would be more scientists, accordingly, more significant discoveries, which would move society further. Another key reason is decreasing number of people who choose science or technology as the sphere. Nowadays, more and more students lean toward the humanities, and popularity of such crucial professions like doctors or engineers declines steadily. As a result, staff shortage appears, that affect the industries negatively, due to slow pace and deteriorated quality of work.
However, I would argue with the idea of students who should learn only science/technology. One major reason is that free choice encourage success. If a person does not love their job, they are less likely to succeed, since there is no motivation, and the industry will degrade. There will be more use if students will develop wherever they want, so they have real ambitions. Moreover, everyone is unique, has different passions, and their preferences should be taken into account. Someone want to learn arts/humanities, have no interest in science, and it is normal tendency. Respect for people’s individuality is vital as a basic human right.
In conclusion, while there are certain arguments in favour of students limited selection of subjects, such as possible significance for human progress, I think that they need to have the right of free choice and study spheres which they truly want.
