In today’s world, many countries are witnessing an increase in life expectancy. Some argue that this shift may come with significant costs and create challenges for governments, while others believe we should make the most of having the elderly around. Although older people benefit society with their experience, in my opinion, the drawbacks are numerous, particularly regarding higher demand for resources.
Those who see the positive side of this phenomenon state that older generations can guide us through difficulties by sharing the wisdom and knowledge they have accumulated over time. When people face challenges, the elderly can act as mentors, accelerating the process of learning where we lack experience. Additionally, they supported us when we were children, teenagers, and young adults. For this reason, we should respect them and appreciate their help throughout our journey in life.
However, I believe supporters of having a growing elderly population have overlooked other aspects of this issue. Today, we are facing shortages of food, services, and accommodation, which make life harder for many people. The increasing presence of older generations only intensifies this problem by consuming more resources. Furthermore, many elderly people hold traditional and conservative beliefs about religion, ideas, and superstitions. If they live longer, this may slow the pace of societal growth and modernization.
In conclusion, while some value the guidance that older people offer, it is important to consider other aspects of the issue. Older people can place significant pressure on countries and governments by increasing population density and hindering rapid progress with fresh perspectives.
