These days, a large number of people tend to deal with health problems at home instead of visiting doctors. In this essay, I will evaluate both the benefits and drawbacks of this trend, before presenting that this is a negative development.
There are some advantages to people who treat their health problems by themselves. Admittedly, not every headache, cold, or stomachache requires a doctor. An individual, who has a basic knowledge of medical treatment, can simply take measures at home such as resting, taking medicine, or using pass-down remedies including massages. This is especially beneficial for patients who cannot go to hospitals right away, and can significantly reduce unnecessary pressure on medical institutions, leaving them with precious time for some more demanding treatments.
However, I believe this is mostly a negative movement, considering that many people are not good at judging the seriousness of their problems. A symptom, which seems negligible at first, can be an early sign of a serious disease. If people delay seeing a doctor, the problem can exacerbate and may become too late to treat. In addition, the Internet is a factor that shapes humans’ false assumptions about their health issues. It can either lighten or magnify the level of seriousness, making people panic, or even more dangerously, feel falsely reassured. On top of that, people with no medical awareness may relieve their sickness by using medicines themselves without considering the safety of their decision. This does not mean that they are independent, but can potentially cause medical risks, which can have an impact on medical centers and other people.
In conclusion, treating small health problems on their own is a good choice for people as long as they have a basic knowledge and know what to do without doctors. Nevertheless, I believe this is a negative trend because making use of this method for too long with problems that otherwise should be treated by doctors can pose a threat on individuals’ health.
