In this essay, I will discuss both benefits and drawbacks of the full-time professional commitment of women. In fact, in modern times, there is a high number of female workers who spend most of their time in their workplaces. This situation has led to many consequences, in particular, as regards the family environment.
On the one hand, many people claim that working for approximately 8 hours per day has reduced time available for housework. For instance, cleaning the floor or the bathroom and preparing meals are all chores difficult to accomplish without enough time. Moreover, female workers who are also mothers have renounced to spend quality time with their families, and this could lead to several problems in the long run. For example, I remember from my childhood that I often felt neglected when my parents worked a lot. Finally, working for a long time during the week has led women not to dedicate free time to themselves, for instance, practicing a sport, taking a walk, or going shopping, and consequently, this has increased level of stress, which reflects in family life.
On the other hand, others think that the transition to a full-time job has contributed to a new distribution of family roles. Since women have full-time jobs, they have been helped by their partners both in doing chores and in taking care of the children. For instance, nowadays we can find an increasing number of fathers who are absolutely interested in their children’s habits.Furthermore, it is essential for a woman with high aspirations to show her value not only in the family environment, but also in a workplace where she can aspire to an important career.
To conclude, even if the stereotype of the woman-mother has prevented women from having full-time jobs for a long time, I strongly believe that it can be considered an important step toward reaching gender equality and that all the previous problems can be easily solved through collaboration between family members.
