In today’s world, for many teenagers, using smartphones is the most time consuming activity. The main driving factors behind this are overly use of smartphones and spending time in social media platforms, the excessive smartphone use has significant consequences for physical and mental health.
One of the main cause of using extended hours of smartphones is its convenience. Modern smartphones are portable and they can be an alternative to some devices because they have capacity that can perform many functions. As a result, they tend to use them frequently. The social media, however, has much grater effect on young people. Many youth, in these days, have social media accounts that they can use them for some purposes such as watching contents that attracted many viewers around the world. Consequently watching or scrolling through social media becomes the habit.
One significant consequence of excessive smartphone use is its negative impact on physical health. This is because, unlike sportsmen, smartphone users engage in limited physical activity, which increases the risk of obesity. As a result, prolonged inactiveness can be contributed to weight gain and poor physical fitness, which increases the risk of health problems in the long term. Another concern is an excessive smartphone use may increase the level of stress and constant distractions, which can result in concentration. In other words, not being able to focus on tasks leads to a lower academic productivity.
In conclusion, the convenience of smartphones and popularity of social media are the main reasons why they spend excessive amounts of time. However, this trend can effect their physical health and the way they concentrate.
