Even though technological progress considered as only positive in the mass media, it definitely has some cultural and ethical problems. As World Wide Web propagates its influence all around the world, famous cultural places that was extremely hard to visit due to of overwhelming crowds of people, now feels empty because they can be seen particularly from the every corner of the Earth. In this case, problem of art galleries and museums publishing their exhibits online arise more and more often.
Although publishing exhibits online may firstly seems as a good idea, it can results in financial loss in the budget of museum.Especially, if museum is not supported by government, its funding based on quantity of its visitors and loss even of 10% of its money can lead to unpredictable results. Also, by taking picture of exhibit to put it online, structure of it can be destroyed. For example, in most of museums there are places where you can’t take picture for safety of the exhibits. Additionally, cultural value of art galleries and museums can decrease. For instance, if in the past people bought tickets to the France to visit Louvre to see Mona Lisa, nowadays, there are countless amount of its pictures online.
it seems, that in the era when everyone has its own device that have a function of taking picture, its actually impossible to prevent taking pictures by visitors and subsequent post of it in social medias .In contrast to these stealthily taken pictures, art galleries or museum can publish their own well taken photos. Moreover, as I mentioned earlier, there are places in museums where taking pictures is prohibited and highly regulated, these areas can become some kind of visiting card of them. For example, there areas in London museum where you can not take pictures and ridiculously rare exhibits are placed there .Furthermore, posting pictures of material of museum online, will result in making a museum more famous and opened in the public eye.
In conclusion, I want to say that publishing pictures of exhibits resulted in decreasing cultural cost of museums and art galleries, but it is something that could not be avoided due to the technological advancements. Therefore, reality should be just accepted by heads of museums and art galleries and certain steps should be made to prevent loss in funding.
