Nowadays, an increasing number of people prefer to socialise through online platforms rather than meeting others in person. While this trend has both advantages and disadvantages, I believe it is a largely negative development because it weakens real-life relationships and may lead to physical and mental health problems.
One significant reason why this is a negative development is that it reduces the quality of face-to-face relationships. Online communication lacks facial expressions, body language, and emotional connection. As a result, friendships and family relationships may become less meaningful and create problems in future. For example, friends who only communicate through social media may rarely meet in person, causing their relationships to become distant over time and make them fell untrustworthy. Therefore, relying heavily on online interaction can weaken genuine human connections.
Another reason why this trend is negative is that excessive online socialising can harm people’s physical and mental well-being. Spending long hours on screens reduces physical activity and may increase loneliness, stress, or anxiety despite constant online interaction. For instance, many young people spend most of their free time chatting online instead of participating in outdoor activities or meeting friends, which can negatively affect both their fitness and emotional health. Consequently, overdependence on online communication can have serious long-term effects on overall well-being.
In conclusion, although online communication offers convenience and allows people to stay connected over long distances, I believe it is a predominantly negative development because it damages the quality of personal relationships and can have adverse effects on physical and mental health.
