In old times, families used to stick together and even live in the same house for generations, but today more and more people are drawing apart from their families and living in another city or even a different country. Possible reasons for this trend and the outcomes of the situation will be further discussed.
We live in a different era from our great great parents. Modernized society and rapidly advancing technology are becoming more promising for young minds to spread their wings and make their dreams come true. In order to achieve this they sometimes have to separate themselves from their families and hometowns. Firstly, in big cities there are considerably more career options than there are in small villages. A young person from a distant town is drawn to the shiny life of a crowded metropolitan and the opportunities it can offer, therefore leaves their family behind to explore life on their own. Secondly, there are less family businesses for younger generations to take over, thus they have to find their skills and career paths elsewhere. For example, agriculture was the centre of economy in the old days, however today manifacturing and tourism took its place and left the golden era of farms and farmers to be a thing of the past.
On the other hand, there are some drawbacks to this revolution. As the families draw apart from each other, the strong ties and emotional support systems get weaker. This causes individuals to feel lonely even in a place full of people. That is the reason for rising depression rates in modern world. Emotional support systems are necessary for humans to keep their mental health and productivity for society. Our families and friends are the ones who support us. It is important to find ways to connect with new people as well as our families back home to create a safe place while living apart from our hometowns. For example, when a child moves away to a different city for university, he/she doesn’t know anybody and feels alone and helpless until making meaningful relationships with others who probably feels the same and shares their experiences.
In conclusion, most of the people are choosing to separate themselves from their birthplace to pursue their goals in life. Wide range of opportunities in bigger cities are undeniable, even though it is heartbreaking to be away from loved ones and it may cause them to feel lonely.
