Many people believe that modern men and women care more about their appearance today than in the past. While today we have many fashion choices and beauty products, I completely disagree with this idea. In my opinion, people in the past, especially during the Soviet era, spent much more time and energy on how they looked.
To begin with, in the past, a person’s appearance was closely connected to social rules and respect for other people. For example, in the USSR, society expected citizens to look very neat and clean. Wearing clean, ironed clothes and polished shoes was necessary because it showed a person’s good character. From a young age, children were taught to look after their school uniforms every day. Adults wore nice suits and dresses even for simple walks or trips to the theater. Today’s popular casual and sometimes messy style would be seen as rude back then, which proves that older generations had higher standards for their look.
Furthermore, the way people valued their clothes in the past required much more care. Because it was difficult to buy clothes in the Soviet Union, people did not throw them away quickly like we do with today’s fast fashion. Instead of buying new outfits every season, people took good care of what they had, often making their own clothes or fixing old ones to look elegant. Creating a good outfit required a lot of imagination, patience, and hard work. This long process shows a much stronger interest in appearance than simply buying cheap clothes today.
In conclusion, although modern society offers easy access to fashion and makeup, it has made our attitude toward looks too casual and simple. The example of the Soviet generation shows that people in the past gave much more time, respect, and effort to their appearance.
