Band 6+: Nowadays people live longer after they retire. How does this affect individuals and society? What can be done about this?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s fast-paced world, the topic of a longer lifespan after retirement has become a subject of significant debate. There are compelling reasons explaining this problem, such as high pensions and better social welfare, including medical treatment, standard of living, and so on. The effects and solutions of this phenomenon will be outlined in the forthcoming paragraph, and from my perspective, it could bring about both positive and negative consequences in measure.

Longer life after people retire can bring both merits and drawbacks to individuals and society. To begin with, harsh working environments and competitive job opportunities make them feel stressed, while retirement allows them to have more time for relaxation and pursue their interest after years at work. However, retirees’ families are responsible for taking care of them since they still depend on their children financially and physically, leading to a financial burden for some families. What is more, it is a waste of human resources as some elderly are still strong enough to contribute to the development of society with their experience and proficiency.

Addressing this challenge requires multifaceted solutions. First and foremost, for the physically strong retired, governments should offer higher salaries to motivate the old to join the workforce, support themselves, and ease the prevailing problem of the aging population in developed nations around the world. This contributes to economic and social development. Additionally, retirees should be encouraged to participate in voluntary activities. This action not only creates further contributions to society but also fosters them to become useful citizens instead of finding themselves worthless.

In conclusion, there are a number of reasons for such a widespread trend as I have mentioned. Knowing an insight into the possible effects may help society to develop and implement preventive measures to avoid struggling with its devastating consequences
