Nowadays, the government does not pay as much attention to scientists’ as private companies do.
Although there are some disadvantages, such as unequal distribution of funding, I strongly believe that advantages outweigh drawbacks since private companies are more interested in research conducted by scientists.
One of the main drawbacks of corporate-sponsored research is that it could be distributed unequally. It happens because sometimes companies allocate their capital towards spheres that could bring them high profits. Therefore, development of scientific fields became unbalanced: spheres that in a low demand receive little and minor support or do not receive it at all. For instance, spheres that are vital for individuals’ long-term well-being, such as rare and hard disease treatment or climate resiliency are often neglected because they are less lucrative for companies. As a result, the direction of supporting research is determined by potential profit rather than the actual needs for society.
However, it is a small price to pay in comparison with enormous opportunities that private corporations give for research. One of the reasons why companies are ready to give a financial backing for research is that successful discoveries could be transformed into commercial products. Even if they allocate money only for sectors that could give them profit, it would be better rather balanced not developing which occurs due to a lack of the government’s investments. Therefore, the potential for commercialization motivates corporations to approach research in a highly-organized and well-funded manner. They will provide everything: modern technologies, high-qualificated specialists, and a straightforward plan for scientific projects. Thus, scientists will achieve breakthroughs faster, and it will be beneficial for almost everyone, not only for corporations, because even if it was done for commercial purposes, it doesn’t change the fact that it’s a scientific discovery.
To conclude, even though corporate-sponsored research could lead to unequal development of scientific spheres, I believe that disadvantages pale in comparison with benefits, as private companies’ funding allows specialists to achieve breakthroughs much faster.
