Band 5+: Nowadays, the number of students choosing social science majors at university outweighs that of those choosing natural science majors. Why is this? how does this affect the society?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the era when more an more people seek a job with a sole objective is to make large sums of money, it is understandable that the number of students choose a major in natural science subjects is deteriorating. Personally, this trend is attributable to the soaring popularity of finance-related subjects, however, its impact in today’s context is inconsiderable.

The reasons behind this trend are down to the fact that science subjects are long deemed as a difficult and demanding subject and therefore it set a preconception for every student that they have to be very excellent at these subjects can they learn, as a result this will deter students from choosing these majors. The combination of complex terminology, rigorous coursework, and the pressure to excel in practical laboratories makes the subjects less appealing to learner compared to other disciplines such as social science. For example, STEM subjects require further education to enter high- quality or specialized job especially Ph.D, a must-have certificate when students want to apply for prestigious researchers institution, meanwhile, students in economic and financial fields can immediately land a job right after their graduation with a degree and experience. Additionally, the career prospects of natural science is clearly harsher than that of other fields, especially in today’s context, there is an increasing demand for careers in fields like business, communication, marketing, etc, which is strongly tied to social sciences and therefore, they are easier to earn a lot of money. Whereas the pathway from a science degree to a specific job can be less well-defined.

If this situation perpetuate at this rate, the first and obvious consequence is that it will result in a decrease in the number of scientists. This means that a lot of scientific fields will be severely affected such as medicine, environment, etc, which will slow down the progress and advancement of technology and hence, put weighty strain on other sectors to compensate for the underdeveloped technological field in national development.Additionally, it can have some potential impact on our society. It is true that our society is currently steering by a pivotal agents that is economy, but the decisive determinant whether economy can be developed or not is dependent on science. An economy where innovation is the primary driving force cannot develop at a high rate.

In conclusion, the current situation, where the number of students pursuing a master in society-related subjects predominantly occupy the the total number of students, is due to two main principal reasons from the education to the occupation, which can severely affect the society
