As we are moving to a more globalised and populated world, traffic congestion has become a major inconvenience for urban life. This essay will delve into the reasons behind this problem and the problems caused by this, before providing some probable solutions for it.
The world population is over 7.5 billion, and most of these people are living in urban cities like New York, New Delhi and London. These are considered one of the most populated cities in the world, each having an average population of nearly 15 million. Since the majority of people living in these cities use motor vehicles, they often face extremely long and mind numbing traffic. This may be due to the lack of proper road infrastructure or excessive vehicles on the road. When the road infrastructure is not properly built, even a few cars on the road can create a traffic jam. Furthermore, if there is an excessive number of cars on the road, along with the poor infrastructure it can result in a massive traffic congestion which is difficult to solve. A major problem caused by this is wasting precious time on the road stuck in traffic. For instance, an ambulance carrying a patient who just had a heart attack is stuck in traffic, and is denied crucial medical attention. This denies citizens access to basic medical needs.
A possible solution for the perpetual traffic congestion can be to create better road infrastructure and reducing the usage of privately owned vehicles on the road. By improving road infrastructure a higher number of vehicles can be accommodated and faster routes can be created. So, travelling from Noida to Meerut which normally takes 4 hours can be covered in just 2 hours, saving a significant amount of time. This will directly help medical patients coming from Meerut to Noida for their treatment. Furthermore, by reducing the number of privately owned vehicles on the road and promoting public transport, fewer cars will be on the road. For instance, if 10 people took the public bus instead of their own vehicle travelling from A To B, they can prevent multiple cars from being on the road, consequently alleviating the traffic congestion problem.
To conclude, by improving the road infrastructure, we can accommodate a higher number of cars and prevent likely congestion. Additionally, not only will the public transport aid in reducing the traffic issue, but also help in reducing the carbon emissions produced by the numerous cars on the road. Thus, by implementing such solutions, these measures can directly alleviate the traffic congestion.
